The new blogocracy
"As a practice, journalism espouses an air of objectivity, purporting to cover all sides of a debate, equally and with emotional distance. While few believe that journalists are unbiased, it is considered a respectable aim of the profession and readers expect them to be as objective as possible. Bloggers, on the other hand, have no such cultural code and their readers rarely hold them accountable for objectivity. In fact, what makes blogging confusing for many is that the practices encompassed by that term are quite diverse."
"Bloggers at the Democratic National Convention signify a shift in media, but not a replacement for mainstream coverage. Their role will be to fill in the gaps, expose the underlying magic, and keep everyone on their toes. What they are doing cannot be compared to journalism; it can only be described as blogging."
G/localization: When Global Information and Local Interaction Collide
"Designers who work with networks must face these tensions and design to take advantage of the global while not destroying the local. This is a hefty challenge and one that i want us to dive into."
"The digital era has allowed us to cross space and time(...)Yet, people don't live in a global world - they are more concerned with the cultures in which they participate."
"Today, we are trying to build a whole new level of social communities. Some folks are building more open social platforms so that participants can modify the structures to meet their own needs."
"They all grew organically. They each have public personalities that early adopters feel connected to. The early adopters really felt as though they were participating in and creating an intimate community, even as the community grew to millions. Users are passionate. Designers are passionate."

Tagging
"Without Google, Yahoo, and their brethren, using the Web would be like wandering through a library where a prankster has restacked the books at random..."
"Imagine instead being able to call on the group judgment of other users, people who are constantly skimming the latest Web content and arranging the best stuff into neatly labeled piles."
"It's called tagging, and it's going on at a handful of free websites--Delicious, Flickr, Furl, and Rojo, among others--where members are voluntarily classifying and categorizing thousands of pieces of content each day."
"...there's a twist that makes tagging a collectivist undertaking: everybody can see everybody else's tags."
"There's no uniformity to the way people tag Web pages, so the same tag might wind up being applied to very different kinds of content. But to most developers, that's actually a strength of the technology, not a weakness."
As maravilhas do "photo sharing"
"The BubbleBar pulls images from your online BubbleShare albums and sends a parade of thumbnails down the side of your computer's desktop, like a filmstrip; placing your mouse over one of the thumbnails pulls up a larger version, along with captions and comments. But that's not all. The BubbleBar also watches for new albums published on BubbleShare by your acquaintances and downloads them automatically. So, if your photographer friends are sufficiently prolific, you can wake up to a new set of images every day, without lifting a finger."

"A smart mob is a group that, contrary to the usual connotations of a mob, behaves intelligently or efficiently because of its exponentially increasing network links. This network enables people to connect to information and others, allowing a form of social coordination."
"...the smart mob is a practical implementation of collective intelligence. According to Rheingold, examples of smart mobs are the street protests organized by the anti-globalization movement."
Wikipedia: Collective Intelligence
"the capacity of a human community to evolve toward higher order complexity thought, problem-solving and integration through collaboration and innovation."
Online Collaboration: What Are The Key Traits Of Ideal Online Collaborators?
"In reality, through the survey they have found out that trained, facilitated teams achieve more creative breakthroughs, faster, and are more likely to achieve extraordinary results, accomplishing things as a team that the individuals working individually could never have achieved."
"Collaboration can be hard work, since it requires us to think outside our 'frames' and see things from others' perspectives."
"To some extent that is the message that this survey gives us: Attitude is most important, and if we believe collaboration will succeed, it will, and if we don't, regardless of our group's skill, experience, and personality, it won't."

Information versus Knowledge
“Several technological and political forces have converged, and that has produced a global, Web-enabled playing field that allows for multiple forms of collaboration without regard to geography or distance – or, soon, even language.”
"What’s the difference between information and knowledge? Information is a message, one-dimensional and bounded by its form: a document, an image, a speech, a genome, a recipe, a symphony score"
"Knowledge results from the assimilation and connecting of information through experience, most often through apprenticeship or mentoring."
"...global conversation is essential to achieving true democratization of knowledge. But simply giving everyone access to e-mail and Google will never in itself flatten the earth."

The Evolution of IM
"Ideally, according to Gizmo's Robertson, people should be able to send instant messages or make an Internet phone call as easily as sending an e-mail message. Someone who uses Microsoft's free web-based Hotmail service, for instance, can transparently send messages to Yahoo Mail or Google's Gmail. This inter-operability dates back to the early days of the Internet, when all e-mail servers were designed to use the same protocol, Saint-Andre says.
IM, however, started out as proprietary software and has stayed that way. Robertson wants to change that with initiatives like Gizmo. "The world I'm trying to create is one in which you have one screen name that works everywhere, very similar to e-mail," he says. "That's not the way IM works today. It's a big mess."27.3.06

O uso do telemóvel
"Quite a few folks are pointing to the results of this survey (graph here) about what features people want on their most frequently used mobile devices. The results are interesting but also probably misleading in about 1000 different ways (text messaging didn't even make the list). But it got me thinking about how I use my most frequently used digital device, my mobile phone. In order of a combination of most usage and importance, here's what I use my phone for:
* Clock. I don't wear a watch, so I look at my phone all the time to check the time.
* Taking pictures + sending them to Flickr.
* Voice. I dislike talking on the phone, but when you gotta, you gotta.
* Text messaging. Texting is preferable to voice in many instances and many friends text more often than they call nowadays.
* Taking pictures. I think of this as distinct from the photo + Flickr usage above. The camera on my phone just isn't that important to me without the ability to easily publish them to the Web.
Stuff I don't want on my phone:
* Music. I am unconvinced of the wisdom of cramming a music player into a phone. The user experience needs to be solved first.
* Email. I still use client-side spam filtering so reading my mail on a phone would be a painful exercise. And I can send email from my phone and that's enough...I can handle not reading my email for hours on end.
* Web browsing. I love the Web, but my preferred portable device for accessing it is my laptop. Not worth the extra expense of adding it to my service plan.
What's your most-used portable device and what do you use it for? Feel free to comment here or link to a post on your site."

A suposta simplicidade do Google
True, but that's because you can only do one thing from their home page: search. Anybody can make a simple-looking interface if the system only does one thing. If you want to do one of the many other things Google is able to do, oops, first you have to figure out how to find it, then you have to figure out which of the many offerings to use, then you have to figure out how to use it. And because all those other things are not on the home page but, instead, are hidden away in various mysterious places, extra clicks and operations are required for even simple tasks — if you can remember how to get to them.
Why are Yahoo! and MSN such complex-looking places? Because their systems are easier to use. Not because they are complex, but because they simplify the life of their users by letting them see their choices on the home page: news, alternative searches, other items of interest. Yahoo! even has an excellent personalization page, so you can choose what you wish to see on that first page.

Through a USB port, you can plug in a flash drive containing information on Cordoba in Spanish, English or French". "He said, 'Blobjects are going to float our world."

Two recent events, Yahoo's purchase of Konfabulator and Google's release of a new beta version of Google Desktop have finally spurred me into action"
"For application developers, the main advantage is that instead of writing two or more programs for multiple platforms (one for the Web, one for Windows, etc.), they can write one app that will run on any machine with the WebOS using the same code base"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
